UK Companies House – New Identity Verification Rules

UK Companies House - New Identity Verification Rules

Directors, LLP members, or persons with significant control (PSC) of UK companies are subject to new requirements introduced by Companies House. The new regulations concern identity verification (IDV), which is the process of confirming an individual’s identity. Certain aspects of the IDV process become mandatory from 18 November 2025, and all aspects will be required by the end of 2026.

As this is a newly implemented rule, some individuals may find it unclear. This article provides concise guidance to assist in complying with the latest legal requirements set by Companies House.

Who Must Meet New IDV Requirements?

The following will be subject to the new mandatory requirements:

  • All directors of UK companies (new and existing)
  • All members of an LLP (new and existing)
  • All PSCs of companies and LLPs (new and existing)
  • Individuals submitting information to Companies House for themselves or others
  • Individual directors of overseas companies with a UK establishment registered at Companies House must also meet the new IDV requirements.

How to Complete Your IDV Process?

Identity verification may be conducted either directly through Companies House or via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). While verification through an ACSP may incur fees, there is no charge for completing the process directly with Companies House. Verification is required only once, unless Companies House requests re-verification for a valid reason.

(A) Route via Companies House:

When utilising the route through Companies House, there are three available methods of identity verification: the UK One Login Check app, the UK One Login web service, or an in-person service offered at selected post offices.

(B) Route via ACSP: The ACSP is able to verify compliance with your new legal requirements through Companies House. You will be required to provide a broad range of documentation, including proof of identification, proof of address, and other relevant documents and information.

Once registration is complete, you will receive your Companies House personal code via email. This code should be stored securely and shared with agents who handle company matters with Companies House, such as filing documents on behalf of clients. The code is necessary for filings with Companies House, director appointments, becoming a PSC, and related activities.

IDV Timeline?

The IDV will be required for certain aspects in the near future, and for all aspects by the end of next year. The current proposed timeline is as follows:

  • 8 April 2025 – voluntary IDV was made available for individuals
  • 18 November 2025 – mandatory ID verification will be required for individuals becoming directors, LLP members, and persons with significant control (PSC) in connection with incorporation and new appointments
  • By Spring 2026 – IDV will be required for individuals filing documents at Companies House
  • By the end of 2026 – mandatory identity verification will be required for all directors, LLP members, and persons with significant control after the conclusion of the 12-month transition period

Final Remarks:

Stan Lee Accountancy Ltd is registered with Companies House as an ACSP and is available to assist you with your IDV requirements.

Once again, you only share your Companies House person code with trusted individuals, such as your accountants who file on your behalf. Please keep this information secure, as it serves a similar purpose to your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for HMRC.
